abuseWonderfully written, intriguing and interesting. However I wonder...shouldn't this be on FanFiction? As a suggestion, you might want to add a bit on "The ship was last seen flying past Umbar under a sickle Moon, with a cat at the masthead and another as a figure-head on the prow." Another wonderful piece of work.

abuseVery nicely put and an interesting deconstruction of a character mentioned oh so briefly in literature. I see references to subjects I covered in my essay, i.e. the Black Death and witches in general ;) Oh man, you would have loved some of the medieval history courses I took. Truly fascinating. I do understand getting angry over it, though - or just sad at tragedies that have occurred because of human stupidity/error/narrow-mindedness.

abuseVery, very interesting concept you have here. I've always wondered about Beruthiel, but never got so far as "Unfinished Tales". I think I have it around my house somewhere...

Anyway. I agree that Tolkien is obviously unfamiliar with cats. I don't claim to know much about them, but I once came upon the saying "Dogs think they're human, cats think they're gods." I agree with that, too.

I like the way you've dug into her character there. Very insightful...I daresay I never would've thought to look into the whole arranged marriage concepts when trying to learn more about her. Nicely done.

abuseA very excellent arguement. You have taken the black and white/good-evil world of fairy tales and fantasy (which can be very unforgiving to those who don't fit into the preconcieved molds) and made it more realistic, turning Beruthiel into a real person instead of the bitter witch it seems she is portrayed as. A very refreshing delve beneath the surface of Tolkien.~Atropos

abuseHello fellow werecat! ^_^
This is an interesting study. Beruthiel was mentioned... she was a character that really intrigued me. Thank you for going in depth for her, it was very interesting.
P.S. You should find your way to my account faster than the cats of Queen Beruthiel... hee hee hee...

abuse"The good Professor was definitely not a cat person."
indeed. lovely story- provided excellent insight into the background behind Beruthiel and her cats.
and thankyou for the kind review of Sea Bell on ffn. each of the sections was 100 words long (making it 4x100 plus the last sentence), so i had to use phrases sparingly... those were revised about ten billion times. but that last line always stayed the same =)

abuseI think that this was an interesting piece that you've written here, and I have to say you've done your research in depth. I've enjoyed reading it, and I like some of the ideas that you provoked throughout this little narrative. Anyways, I think that this was an eloquently persuasive essay since you've convinced me to look at this minor character through another facet. I'm sorry that I haven't got a lot of time to read your other works, but I shall get to them sooner or later. Anyway, as for the lighthearted charm here, I liked the sense of humor that you've used about cats. Although cats aren't my preference of animal (dogs are) I still like them, nonethless. The background information on cats was impeccable, and that I applaud you for. All in all, I think that this essay has some strong, valid points to stand by themselves. You came up with whole paragraphs for one simple sentence and rational reasons. I'd have to say that this was very well done, and you get bonus points for adding a bibliography at the end. I couldn't detect any visible mistakes, so there isn't anything to comment about there. Keep up the good work. Hasta luego.

abuseohh, i loved this! i adore cats...my fav animal...and i also believe strongly in reading between the lines. i dislike the image of a person being "evil" - isnt there always another side to the story? ur such a clever writer, it's so fun to read ur stuff. very interesting

abuseSomeone is a kitty expert :)
This quickly turned from a light insight to an obscure Tolkien character, to an obscure insight on a light creature :)
Very interesting, and enjoyale, however, despite any odd support of cats, and the good queen b.
I liked it, and anyone who sees any fault, other than my lighthearted nit picks, could go pet a kitty. :)

abuseIf ever there was a vindication of an unjustly accused victim of prejudice and ignorance, it would be Beruthiel. This essay is a scholarly exploration of Beruthiel's story, of which little is written and less known, but in addition, it shows understanding of the feminine psyche as well as the feline nature.
Those of us who love cats are most favoured to have their serene presences, comforting purrs and wise silences. May the Mother grant Beruthiel the same --but you'll have to read Tashenubaste's other tales to find out!
Blessed be

abuseCorrect me if I am wrong (I don't have my copy of FotR with me) but wasn't that quote the other way round - I believe that it was Aragorn who said that of Gandalf.
Please note that I could be wrong; I just somehow seem to remember this that way round!
That aside, this is a very interesting and well-written essay. Tolkien seems certainly not to know cats; a cat owned me for two years, so I have a little experience.
Beruthiel always seemed rather unfairly put upon to me; I'm quite pleased that there are others who feel the same.
Just lovely, overall.

abuseVery interesting. I've always found Queen BerĂșthiel fascinating, and as I'm a cat person, the cats make her even more interesting. I also completely agree with you on Tolkien not knowing much about cats. It would be impossible to turn one into a slave. Anyhow, I like this very much.
