In truth was the only thing poor heart wished,—

Alas,—fond hopes so dashed on hard rock shores,

Reality imposed its force on life,

One day awoke to find a business set;

It's not for want of working money's growth,

Or understanding less economy,

That one day I looked out and saw fair love,

Was everything metallic measurement,

And, there could find no touch or care for me;

¿Is it sad to realize life's stern terms,

When all heart dreamt of was illusion's fare?

¿Or is it understanding that comes due,

Once time has spent its energy onwards,

That life's goal is more life at any cost?
