Damn! This is great. I loved it. Excellent and very impressive! The paragraphs are a bit too long for my taste though, but hecks, it's still good!

this was a very emotional and well described essay. i feel for tom.
you should work on your dialogue techinique though. when you have a conversation, you split up each person's part into a new paragraph. and if one person is speaking, but starts on a new topic, that becomes a new paragraph too.
it's a little complicated, i know.
