allyburner 2008-04-28 . chapter 1Actually, there have been actual medical studies carried out that show the relationship between gender and the parts of the brain that are more active. Though I do agree that there are many other factors involved, like you say, I must point out that this is definitely not sexism. It has scientific and statistical backing.
Well... onto your actual writing.
Your structure is a little confusing. The first question posed in your introduction is (a) easily answered without needing any lengthy philosophical discussion and (b) does not mention sexism, which appears to be your main point. It concerns firstly WHY and then WHAT else, as you mention later, is involved. You do not explore either in nearly enough detail.
There ARE a lot of questions asked, and though this is a valid device and I can see your logic in using so many, it leaves the reader rather confused as to just what your point is. You raise FAR too many questions and either do not answer them, or do not put enough detail into the answer - e.g. where does your last question lead? Your body paragraph does go towards answering your 'is it really gender', though it would be much better with more proof, and by stating the factors instead of phrasing them as questions (there have been so many by now, it gets a little tiresome). Plus, by the end of the body, you still have not addressed the 'WHY' you posed in your introduction.
Adding to the confusion: the conclusion comes out of nowhere - nowhere do you examine the specific way in which the structure of the education system is affected by gender - you state that it does, but give no evidence. If your main point is that classes are affected by gender, then give more examples. The instances you state in the body are relevant, but too subjective, too vague, and poorly backed. From what source do you gather, for example, that boys do not put more effort in maths? If there is a source, name it. In a potentially controversial topic as this, you need more proof than your personal opinion.
... if that sounded like a flame, I'm sorry, I didn't mean for it to be. I think this is a very valid topic for discussion, but that there are many more perspectives - scientific, philosophical and otherwise - that play a part, for your essay to be sufficiently in depth. |
Joe 2006-04-02 . chapter 1 Good god, Siegmend Freud died long ago, and his theories exploded along with him. You need to read more than one thing if you want to write about it. You believe blindly in one viewpoint, without stepping back to look at the larger picture. It's frankly saddening. |
Just another statistic. 2005-06-25 . chapter 1 I can't say I totally agree with this. There is a great deal of sexist issues in the world, but I haven't heard this "myth" before. The actual idea that males should be more likely to succeed in maths than females, is laughable. Every intelligent person should know that subjects like maths aren't based on whether you are male or female, but on your different areas of ability.
This may be slightly off topic, but the idea of males being better at sport then females has been around a long time, and it's strongly protested against. But can you honestly say that it's not a little bit true? The way males are built means they can begin a sport more effectively than females. This has nothing, however, to do with natural talent or practice. I don't agree that males should be labelled as better at sport, but there's a grain of truth in it. So surely you can't dismiss everything you're told, that sounds sexist, as untruthful - without looking into it?
Now, I'm not sure what it's like in your school. But mine tries to encourage equality. I'm not saying sexism doesn't exist in your school, just that it's not like that everywhere. In most places, males and females, equally, are based on ability - not gender.
I do like this piece of writing though. I like things that make me think. xD |
LoopyL 2005-02-18 . chapter 1i don't think that gender has anything to do with what subjects ur good at. It depends on the teacher, i'm a girl and i'm better at maths and science than i am at english. Thats probably only because i've had better maths and science teachers than english teachers |
Victim of the Wraith 2005-01-11 . chapter 1I liked it. I've always done really good in English and Social Studies and not so good at science and math, at least where the earth is concerned. So this has now opened up a world of speculation for me. Maybe it's a goverment conspiracy...I watch alot of X-Files ignore that comment. Otherwise it's good. Don't worry about asking too many questions because I find that it's a good way to draw a reader into a peice of writing and to leave him with an impression. Hope you get a good audience with this and if you ever find anything to support it I hope you come back and write a companion to this. |
endless horizon 2004-12-18 . chapter 1ok i dont exactly agree with you. u see more than half of the social studies teacher in whatever school have been males. and i've always had a female math teacher. the person getting highest marks in engich and history class are guys. i got the highest marks in my math and science class and i'm female. i dont think i can relate to u on this aspect. maybe its because of the different experiences. neways nice article |
UlyessxPenelope 2004-12-08 . chapter 1I have some questions to ask? You can E-mail it back to me.1. Is this only in the US and Western Europe or is this global?2. At what point in time are you basing this on (ex. the middle ages,1950s, present time.)?3. Do you know the diffrence between Sex and gender ( sex is biological ie DNA and genatalia, and gender is the cultral or socital expectations Based on sex)?haha i just difined them for you.4. And what is societies expectations on the genders in the society (yes their can be more than just two genders)?maybe if you answer these questions I can help you try and find an answer. by the way your answer to your question that you posted is based on social biologywhich is great to rea d in TIME but it is neither a sound or valid anthropolgical theory
Thanks Antigone |
Forest Passant 2004-09-19 . chapter 1hmm, interesting. i'm a girl and i'm personally better at english... you made some good points. |
Sandra 2004-09-17 . chapter 1 Like omg u r so right girls and boys should be equal im sick of all this men are better than women stuff i mean who the hell are they to say theyre better i mean who picked them u know? ur so right i love your essays and i actually think ur writing styles a lot like mien! |
Joe Male 2004-09-16 . chapter 1 Where did you come up with this "myth"? I've never heard of it, and i happen to be damn good at social studies and english. Your theory, while possibly psychologically feasible, it is based on the largest pile of horseshit i have ever had the misfortune of encountering. If you wrote this in a vain attempt to sound smart or pave the way for gender equality, then do yourself a favor and just shut up. |
SakuraJen 2004-09-16 . chapter 1hmm... some good points you got there that i think would be a good basis for a psychological study that would look into stuffs like that... :) |
Tiefling 2004-09-15 . chapter 1 Not bad. You bring up some interesting questions. However, like many of your essays, this one could use more research and thinking through.
'When you're interested in what you're learning, you retain 30% of the lesson.' Where did you get that figure from?
English studies was actually originally a course *designed* for women, to keep them busy since they weren't supposed to be able to handle 'important' subjects like maths, science etc. I remember reading about it at Uni. |
Voronwe 2004-09-15 . chapter 1Well, it's only a myth. The real truth is that men are best at pretty much everything, except giving birth.
We'd whoop your asses if we tried, though.
Love,
Voronwe |
 2004-09-14 . chapter 1 I have actually never heard that myth... |
fugiguru 2004-09-14 . chapter 1"When you're interested in what you're learning, you retain 30% of the lesson."
whoa... so, at the most, students remember only 30% of what they're taught? our schools SUCK! |
