abuseI totally agree with this essay. Everyone has different tastes and different things they like. If someone does not shonen-ai/yaoi then they shouldn't read Shonen-ai/yaoi stories. Same thing if they don't like characters being bashed or if they don't like OCs. It's common sense (something that is greatly lacking in our society).

abuseI just like to say I like your essay and a few more things;1. I like Anzu more then Yami and I was happy to see that someone else thought his speeches about 'lyk the heart of the cards' were dorky, and his character is 'Napoleon Dynamite' dorky (okay, you can totally see him ranting about ligers can't you?)2. I am a yaoi fan girl, and I have seen nasty reviews. I am also a Christian, and right now and very angry with Christians in general (not for yaoi reasons but... a lot of things.3. I read Anzu bashings sometimes because they sometimes strike my funny bone. I don't go out of my way to hate her.4. Where IS the love, people?

abusethank. you.

you finally addressed all the issues that have irked me for as long as i've read fanfiction.

so there IS a god in heaven.

i really see your point when you say that if you can't find what you're looking for in other people's work, write your own. i've seen tons of reviews for yaoi stories saying that the boys weren't hot enough, there wasn't enough sex, the whole nine yards. i say deal with it, and get a life. you have brains and fingers (i presume) so put your own ideas on paper. or the computer. and i think this piece reflects that. and i also hate bashing of female leads. if you don't want that interfering with relationships, write your own fanfiction where the female does not come in the way of someone's relationships, and stop yelling at the people who chose to write what they wanted to. glad we're on the same terms with that.

about mary sues, that's where i think i disagree. if the author is young and struggles to reflect herself within her work, fine. if she is an experienced and mature writer, however, i don't think a mary sue is a good idea. now, if someone already has a mary sue, i can't say anything. if someone is writing about the downfall of a mary sue, hey, fine with me. but if someone who is comfortable with themselves and had come to terms with who they are (as i suppose many older authors are) then i don't think that's acceptable. but, then again, i'm not a fan of preaching correct methods of writing to someone. if you want to do it, do it. and, if something irks you and you don't want to see it, press the back button and move on with your life. don't waste your time on "flaming" the other person or teaching him/her how to write. make it an enjoyable experience for everyone: put up, or shut up.

thanks for writing this though, and putting many frustrations in writing. shows that you can deal with your anger in a mature way that informs but does not interfere. :)

abuseWell, I agree with pretty much all you said. I have my own account on FF.Net, and I kinda like it that way. (though I don't write that much, due to language problems. I'm Dutch, and 14. My English isn't what I'd like it to be. Sigh.)Most shounen-ai and yaoi stories I don't mind, though I avoid anything rated above PG13. *coughLEMONScough*It's actually helped me to open my mind al little... I used to be weirded out by homosexual relationships. I'm completely used to it now... I was the only one in my family who DIDN'T freak when we went to see the movie Alexander. *lol*Some pairings seem odd to me, though. I mean, Jounouchi and Kaiba? Not happening. -.-' And pairing up people who share a body (think Dark/Daisuke, Krad/Satoshi, Yami/Yugi etc) could cause some slight practical problems ^^;

Rabid yaoi fangirls scare me, though. I have a vague idea for a story which shall likely get me flamed by at least four groups of them. >_>

Ah, yes. The female leads. Though someone like Anzu isn't exactly my favorite character, I don't hate her either....Now that I think of it, there's only one character in ANY fiction I truly hate. (Which would be DN Angel's Satoshi Hiwatari. Yes, I'm odd. :P) Though I tend to lean towards the odd couplings, those characters never bothered me...

Mary Sue-ism. *sweatdrops* Guilty. Two years ago. I was twelve. Sue me. (no pun intended...heheh)I hardly ever read them, don't flame 'em, but I don't like them either. I did write a paper on them once... I now know I can be awfully sarcastic. ^^

Wow, that's one long review. It's not exactly a review either... pretty much my own rent. Though I probably don't classify as "mature" when it's about my age, I agree with most you said! ^-^ You voiced many a reader's thoughts very nicely. It's odd to see people flaming each other for no real reason if you're not actively involved in any of these groups...Nice job!~EyeChan

abuseI like the way you go indepth in your arguments, although there were some points that went a little off-track, but I found them quite humorous and it only enhanced your fic to me. This is something I can relate to, because this is something that I see all the time. Now, to get things out of the way, I'm not exactly a Yu-Gi-Oh! fan, but I've read some of the manga and thought some of the plot ideas were clever, especially with Yugi being the King of Games. Now, I don't find Anzu annoying at all, I do find her as a wholesome character. However, now that you mention Kairi, I'm not really too fond of her, but then, I don't exactly hate her either. It might be true that some people don't like the female characters because they're hanging out with their favorite male character. Maybe it is so. But just like you like those characters because they're simply themselves, there are people that simply don't 'click' with the female characters for being themselves. I myself don't like some of the female characters, though I like some of them (this includes Miaka from Fuushi Yuugi, Bulma from DragonBallZ, Anzu, Hinata and Ino from Naruto, and Rikku and Yuna from Final Fantasy X). Sometimes the female characters CAN be annoying, but I can tolerate them. About the Mary Sues, I don't care for them, but Mary Sues are one of my personal pet peeves. Sure, it's just fanfiction, but do other people really want to read it? I think one of the reasons for writing is because other people want to read it. That's why they come to fanfiction, do they not, to read a nice story about their favorite characters and see some more continuations of the story. And if those people are writing for themselves, why would they post their story up for publicity, for all the other people to see in the first place? Anyways, about the female bashing, you say you don't like people writing people out of character. But then, you say it's only fanfiction. Now, I really hate it when characters are out of character. Like, in Naruto, I'd see Sasuke go all mushy goo goo over Sakura, and most of all, the writing is terrible. Two things tick me off. Firstly, Sasuke only has one thing on his mind, and that is revenge. Second of all, Sakura is terribly weak, and she'd never catch Sasuke's attention. HOWEVER, Sakura does have potential, like her name implies. If the writer manages to portray Sakura believably and go indepth on how Sakura trained to become stronger, and Sasuke started to notice her strength, then we have something going on there. Oh yes, I am a yaoi fan as well. I really don't like it when people say 'gay pairings are SO wrong!1!11!!1 XDXDXD' However, I'll restrain from commenting, because that's they're opinion...

All in all, very good essay, and some of it made me consider a bit. Do keep up the good work.

abuse*enthusiastic applause*

For one thing, I rather dislike Yami-Yugi. Not much of a character rather than a saint. Kaiba is so much more interesting.

That out of the way, good job.

abuseHI!. I arggre with you if you don't like a story then don't review.

I've got a bad feeling that when I write fan fiction I go into the mary sue section as I tend to do a new charater based on me.

it just for fun really. before you start seaching for me on the authors list you're not going to find it because I'm not a member at either here or fan fiction net.

good work on this

see ya
