Your Buddy! (Reviewers Beware!) 2005-07-11 . chapter 1
Okay! Its your buddy again (Reviewers Beware!)!

Hey, Mister Sh*thead... I mean, Max Krugman?

I think YOU completely missed the point of that movie.

First of all, it can be considered a satire against racism - the people who turn full color instead of being black, white, and grayscale are those who are being hated.

Secondly - it is speaking out against censorship, because all the color is gone and all the "controversial" books are blank. Hell, all the books are blank. It's rather like Ray Bradbury's book, "Fahrenheit 451," no?

Thirdly - the world stops progress. It's basically communism, but with racism and prejudice. It wouldn't be wonderful to live in - not now, not then, not EVER. Notice - everything is gray, boring... the same. How can anything be considered good without anything bad? Oh, yeah, kitten stuck in a tree... how terrible. Boo-hoo.

Though, you are right - there IS nothing else. That's why it's bad. It's a prime example of a distopia - a utopia people want, but terribly flawed to point out that it simply can't happen. There is nothing bad - so how the HELL would you know what good was? There's nothing to base it on - the life is hollow and empty; shallow and devoid of the complexities of life.

How do you truly know truth without deception? Hot without cold? Good without evil? How can you be intelligent if no one is stupid? For example: I am intelligent because I notice this, you are stupid because you do not.

However, even if I'm WRONG, it can still be interpreted that way, OR be satirized by a writer like Rio. For argument's sake, let's say I'm wrong about the movie and you're right. In which case, you completely missed the point of her story AND you completely misinterpreted it.

A world like Pleasantville would be a wonderful place to live in. You wouldn't have a lot of good stuff, but you wouldn't care. It would mean never having to care about anything. It would be beautiful. There is NOTHING ELSE in Pleasantville. And that means they aren't keeping anything from the people. It's just not there. The tragedy was that once you bring something else in, you can't stop it.

*shudders* Living in Pleasantville would be horrific.

Anyways, I loved it, you captured that sappy super-golly-gee-gosh-darn-happy-tastic sound like something out of the 50's. I loved your tone and writing style and your capturing all the important details. Great job!

The thing that's neat about Pleasantville is that it's very allegorical to the transition of the apple-pie white-picket-fence culture of the 1950s to the counterculture of the 1960s. It shows perfectly well the way kids started acting out, having sex, listening to rock and roll, and how women became more aware that there can be more to life than being a loving wife, mother and home maker. There was a lot of reaction against the counterculture by white men and others who saw their poer declining, and they spoke out against it, but society progressed, anyway. Neat, eh? Sorry, I'm just a massive history geek, and I can't miss an opportunity to show off. Keep writin'! ^_^
