| MiggsThompson 2005-08-13 ch 1, | abuseI imagine it would be terribly sexist for me to say that women should dress in skimpy outfits and dance about like idiots according to the will of the men. Of course, it would be equally sexist for me to say that women should dress in any way at all and relate in any specific way at all with men...including telling them to dress conservatively and to not date until a certain age. I disagree with the way that women are objectified in this society but I do not think that this problem will be solved by increasing restrictions on women--I say that women should be allowed to dress and do as they choose the same as men. A person should not be judged by their clothes or told to wear a certain thing or not wear another certain thing...in my opinion...especially on basis of sex or any other category. If a person wishes to dress in very few clothes it is none of my business to approve or disapprove...I don't make the same decision as them but it would be paternalism to try and force my decision on another. |
| The Pancake Chef 2005-08-06 ch 1, | abuseTo start off, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera are both so cliche now that using them as an example is just damn redundant. True, they're both "dirrty" but it's a lot more than just those two. I hear what you're saying, but it's not just the media's fault; it lies in decreasing family morals and values and distant mothers and fathers and such. And scandals and skankiness DID exist pre-Britney/X-tina--hello, Marilyn Monroe? Madonna? Sex sells; it sold in the past, sells in the present, and will sell in the future. The best thing for you to do is to just present your opinions to your future daughter(s)in hopes that they won't be subjected to Jerry Springer and Maury. Two shows that are, by the way, very entertaining to watch. |
| Formerly 2005-08-04 ch 1, | abuseSexy pop divas are sexy. What you want society to consider them NOT sexy? Deal with it. Also, there's nothing wrong with the image. Or nudity. Sex at a young age, now, that can be a problem. However, with proper education, it wouldn't have to be. I mean, eight years old is a little too young, but I could see it happening at fifteen with no ill effects, in an ideal society, which is supposed to be what we're working towards. |
| Dream2Aspiration 2005-08-03 ch 1, anon. | abusePretty decent essay. Grammar, spelling, and structure are acceptable. Moving on, you can't blame Britney Spears or Christina Aguilera for the pop diva image. There are many others before her. Supermodels, actors, and such. Not their fault. Not everyone adopts this "sexy pop diva image". I know lots of people that don't. I know lots of kids that don't. It's the pop divas that are implanting the sexual image into kids head. It's the media. It's television and media hype. You're blaming the wrong people. |
| Shye Mareck 2005-08-03 ch 1, anon. | abuseGood topic. You did an excellent job of describing the problem, but as a critic it is equally important that you give your reader some solutions to think about. I would also argue that this is a symptom of a bigger problem ie, decrease in family values, the degraded appetite of our society, lack of parent involment in their children's choices. Certainly my mother wouldn't have let me out of the house in clothing that was immodest or inappropriate. (I confess that I tried to sneak out to parties wearing my friend's clothes that were sexier than anything in my closet.) You did anaylze the motivation for the girls' dressing as they did, but really, don't Britney and Christina have right to wear what they want without being blamed for the lowered expectations of parents and society. If society didn't embrace those styles, the diva's wouldn't be wearing them. |
| Modulated 2005-08-03 ch 1, | abuseA good, thorough essay that gives more insight then most essays on this topic. Keep it up. |
| Proud to be an American 2005-08-03 ch 1, | abuseyeah, I agree. I see a lot of little girls wearing these wicked short skirts and belly shirts and stuff. Also, some of my friends (15 years old) are already sexually active. eh, what has society done? ~*Toni*~ |
