I liked it alot. The great use of adjectives and the suspense kept me wanting to read this piece. One thing though...the way the woman talked to herself was a bit "corny". A lot of scared victims do talk to themseleves with reasuring words, but it seemed unrealistic. Congradulations on a job well done.

(fyi- I did like the ending, but I agree with you when you say it doesn't feel "quite right". Maybe it should have been [even] more focused on the red fence?)
