To penelope: no, that isn't how -i- intended this poem to be interpreted (but, obviously, you can read into it what you'd like...). It's about the ignorance of American youth (at the very least...) about world affairs and politics and such... their overwhelming concern with things like that which is mentioned in the poem, to such an extent that the latter obliterates any interest in their country and its doings at home and abroad. that -is- a generalization, i realize that not everyone is like that. i think i'll mention here, too, that i -am- an American youth... 8-) |
