M I like it, as far as I like free-verse poetry, because it uses a concept like the American dream to communicate a seemingly small event such as a break-up as a great tragedy which is more akin to the feelings of your friends.

Do you have any personal reservations against the American dream or is that just a method to emphasise the point.
