Tragically beautiful.

A question: if the guy dislikes his apartment so much, and longs for some sign that there really is something beyond the mat, the trees, the sounds coming from outside, why doesn't he go out? Why doesn't he just stay in the alleys and subways where he thinks stink less anyway?

The piece is written well enough, but there are some odd past participles in it. Like "troddened".
