My theory was always that the desire for 'glorious death' and glory in general was a kind of genetic culling mechanism. A way to siphon particularly violent, otherwise worthless surplus males towards productive ends, like dying in an entertaining manner (for instance, US soldiers dying in helecopter crashes and the like).
