Radio Saturday 2006-05-28 . chapter 1Ah, Mr. Quinn, I like this very much. "No, I am not Prince Hamlet, nor was meant to be." Prufrock is one of my favorite of Eliot's poems (after "The Waste Land," of course!) and I liked your prose version. It felt like the character of Prufrock set down in Giorgio de Chirico's "Hebdomeros," which is, effectively, several of de Chirico's paintings written out (in sentences ten pages long. I can't say I recommend it).
However, as I said in my review of "Crimson Meadows," I would have liked more description. That's the one opportunity I think you missed here -- in prose, you have the opportunity to describe in lush detail the surroundings and people that the poet leaves to the imagination.
But still, I really liked it. It felt true to the spirit of the poem and, while I think you could have deviated a little more from the letter of the thing, this is still a fine piece of work. I look forward to reading more of your stories. |
