beautiful. my grandmother had a heart attack and has been barely hanging on for about a week. i think they're going to take her off life support. so i know this feeling, and you wrote it perfectly. this is a favorite. sometimes words aren't enough, but you expressed the pain in its simplest, raw form.

i really like the last line, "death didnt bother to knock" really nice.
