I liked the emphasis of smell. That was quite poignant. I've always been amazed how smell is entirely important when it comes to home.
One thing: "Hunter took a deep breath, taking the scents and the feelings of home into him as he set aside the small wicker basket he was carrying and closed the door behind him."
It felt long and convoluted when I first read it. Maybe you could break the thought up a bit to clear up your space. Maybe...
