rrmehta364 2006-04-05 . chapter 1First, of all I really hope this review doesn't sound like a flame. It just happens to touch a sore spot of mine.
First the line, "The homeless that take shelter under bridges," Well, yes. But there are a lot more people under the streets in most other countries. In India you'll se sprawling slums with hundreds of thousands of people without food, water or even the most basic services.
"The crimes committed everyday,The explosions of bullets every night,": The average crime rates in America have been dropping rapidly for the past decade. Today, American crime rates are once again approaching European levels. Yes, crime is too high but its still not as bad as it once was. At least most of America's leadership aren't petty thugs. In Bihar (a state of India) a train robber one the governship and destroyed the economy of the state. The situation is worse in sub-saharan Africa where militia thugs like Charles Taylor lead to to the death to millions to line their own pockets. The real criminals get put into jails, not elevated to power like so many other places in the world.
"How can American be a beacon of hope, freedom and liberty" : Well, it does despite your gripes. Every year half a million people sneak into AMerica despite being the dangers of crossing a scorching desert. Why? Because they want to raise there families in America. Yes, America has its xenophobes, but compared to almost every other first world nation, America is open to foreigners. Although the color of my skin is different from the color of the skin of the majority, I feel I am just as American as anyone else. Nowhere else can anyone become truly an equal in the eyes of others without claiming a thousand years of ancestry to that nation.
"America no longer promises anything to me,Only pain, suffering and terror," : If that's all that America promises to you, why don't you leave the nation. I'll give you several reasons why that's a terrible idea. I looked in your bio (please, I don't want this to sound like a personal attack) and it says your parents were from China. Well, if you go to China you won't be allowed to speak your mind, write a poem like this one, use the real google, practice your own faith. You'll have a government that can take the land from you at any moment, and already killed hundreds of thousands of tibetans to gain their land. Or would you like to go to Europe. I'm guessing that's a place you would think is doing things better. Well, in Europe immigrants are treated not much better than garbage. In France, over fourty percent of young immigrants have no jobs. That's why thousands of cars were burned this winter to vent their frustration. In America, the average third generation Latino makes the same amount as the average white American (yes, I see the injustice in how African Americans have been treated in America) In America, jobs are actually plentiful. While our rate of poverty remains distressingly high for a first world nation, America is still the engine of the global economy.
"Those from other lands wish this nation to Hell," : Well, yes dictators do wish America to Hell. While one can debate the merits of the war in Iraq for hours on hours, America is the only nation to take a firm stand on other terrible world issues. When genocide happened in the Darfur America was the only major nation to call it what it was: genocide. Although America has been thwarted in the security council so far, and too timid to take action on its own, America still took a more humane stand than the rest of the world. America was the nation that removed two of the most brutal dictators in the world. While America continues to support despots like the ones in Saudi Arabia, America also has been a bulwark of freedom. Eastern Europe had the heavy yoke of Soviet domination thrown off because of American efforts. Taiwan remains a democracy because of the American millitary. Today, it is the American millitary that defends international security and the new democracies in the middle east, eastern europe and central asia. Moreover, although America does have agricultural subsidies, they are far less than what one sees in Europe or Japan. Those subsidies have led to the starvation of millions in the developing world. While America has taken many misguided actions in the past, it continues to be a beacon of hope and freedom because it still has the courage to lead.
"Aren't you "Proud to be an American"?" : Despite having parents from India, I can still proudly say that I am an American. |
