Even if this poem might seem religious, the line "to escape this hell" would actually contradict that. It is somewhat ironic. And the words "heard" and "listen" help support the theme of "I've seen too much." This person seems like they would have been very helpful, perhaps a therapist to a friend. So it does seem like there was once happiness. The choice words are very good I might add.
