Its an interesting story. I found the topic a little cliche but it was interesting how you told about the characters enough to define them. Personally I think that you might have gone a little overboard with all the misery of her life but whatever floats your boat.

She seems to have bad luck, and an equally bad entourage. Don't give up writing! You should continue Maia's story in a sequel or whatnot. I already admire her a lot for her courage.
