TheNewUnderground 2006-12-25 . chapter 1I admit, I took a look at the sheer length of this thing and was a bit discouraged (I'm not one for long poems). but I read it through and was very pleasantly surprised. I especially admire that you address modern themes but don't become swamped in them...and, at the same time, make this piece very personal and timeless. That actually might be one of the bits, however, that turned me off of it a little - at times it felt a little self-indulgent, in particular most everything after the line "Raised under green plastic trees and on an endless road." There are certain lines I loved, however. "Read me the rights of the city/I lived where men died and I don’t feel guilty" is stark and confessional yet remorseless in less than twenty words. In my humble opinion, this piece would be absolutely mind-blowingly amazing if you condensed it a bit, so overall it had that effect. Feel free to ignore my criticism, of course :) |
