Heh, I can just see a modern Dante being turned down by a publisher because his poem was too long. "Yes, sir, we like your poem, but it really is too long. Recent studies indicate that readers like their books concise, so if you would please condense it down into just the seventeen most important syllables..."
Still, I'd miss "abandon hope, all ye who enter here."

Oh, haha. I'll be laughing about this the whole day. Putting The Divine Comedy into 17 syllables, three lines-and such blunt and accurate lines at that.
