I think you're off to a great start. Already Lila is an easy character to like and understand.
Your introduction to the characters was casual and certainly gives us no indication of the bumpy times you have planned for them at the reunion.
I especially loved Lila's 'Cross my heart and hope to die'. I do so like when these seemingly random (and common) phrases show up in thriller/mysteries. Double-meanings are such fun!
