Great first paragraph. I really liked the analogy. You describe the political landscape very well, with a lot of ease, so that the reader understands. Most people don't have a clue about Saxon England! I think there are some missing commas sprinkled throughout. I like your characterization through actions, like Edmund's brotherly "love" of Aldgyth. And the last line sends a chill up my spine...a good one, because I can totally empathize with Edmund's desire for revenge. This is getting suspenseful! Good job! *faery tragedy

First of all, glad to see you're back! Secondly, I like how effortlessly this chapter is written. I'm always envious of people who write really detailed prose without bogging down the reader in flowery imagery. However, I think the dialog in the middle of the passage seems a little forced. Oh. Intense beginning. And you used quite a little plot twist. I like ease at which you seem to write...your stuff flows really well and that's hard to do considering you have to inject little historical tidbits here and there and make the reader understand everything. Aldgyth's treatment at the monastery is cruel, but it seems totally plausible. I'm actually concerned for her welfare. I'm excited to see where you take this! *faery tragedy

Everyone says a chapter should be able to stand alone. I really feel like you accomplish that effortlessly. With Warlord, each chapter has a beginning, middle, and end--all that jazz. Aldgyth is sympathetic. The fourth paragraph really emphasizes this. Still, people have to cope with the loss of loved ones. I like the descriptions in this chapter especially. You never overdo anything. It's refreshing. Because of your description, we can sense the darkness about Eadric already. It's good foreshadowing. And wow, the part about Morcar was absolutely...creepy. It was gruesome and it sent a shiver up my spine. Shocking! I hope Eadric's fate is cruel. Great writing. *faery tragedy

You brought us into the story immediately. Good touch. The dialog between Edmund and the thanes is crafted perfectly. Edmund is very sympathetic in this chapter--I mean, he usually is, but here, with him facing kingship and the Danes and trying to cope with the deaths of his brother and lover, I really feel for him. You've created a likable protagonist (hard to do). *faery tragedy

Very captivating first chapter. I enjoyed the language and the description. This isn't my favorite time period, but I like how you've written it.

You portray the emotions so well in this chapter. There's a level of awkwardness that you captured with Edmund and Elswyth that seems to echo a lot of what happens in life. I really emphasize with Elswyth and her wariness of her baby's birth. You description of the birth is perfect...and then the tragedy. I didn't expect it at all. I felt like crying! *faery tragedy
