| ihrtbks 2007-06-17 ch 1, | abuseAmusing...I often think about this topic too. How can something, anything be nothing if it the pronoun anything or something can describe it? I LOVED THIS! |
| FugitiveGirl 2007-03-23 ch 1, | abuseOh... your essay would be good if it did not sound so arrogant and condescending, because I'm lazy and I can, I shall end with a quote. "If you're average, half the population is more stupid than you are." -Eniisa (from the other half of population that is more intelligible than you) and yes, to make this more constructive, I shall add that: You need to realise yes, there are people who don't understand what black, white, nothing, something, means - but they are NOT stupid! This is an inaccurate measure of intelligence and condescending. How would you like it if I gloated for 25 minutes about something you didn't understand and made you feel like crap? Not very good, I assume. You also need to realise that some people are smarter than you; and because of this, people like me who already understand the themes and ideas behind the essay, will think of you in a (not very nice) way. This is because, you need to demonstrate to us, as your audience that you are an intelligible ** sapien with more than 2 brain cells to gain our respect. Trust me, no one is going to respect your work if you treat them like crap |
| Formerly 2007-03-03 ch 1, | abuseWhat are you, fourteen and stoned for the first time? |
| dessertfirst 2007-03-01 ch 1, | abuseI think you probably just don't understand what the word "absence" means. Your essay could be more affecting if you didn't affect such an air of superiority and condescension. |
| life on rewind 2007-03-01 ch 1, | abuseInteresting ... very interesting ... |
| Shadowkitsune95 2007-02-28 ch 1, anon. | abuseWow, now my brains running in cricles. I'm gonna be thinking about this all night now...damn. Anyway, interesting piece. Never really thought about what 'nothing' really is, but then again that's why you wrote this, huh? Good job! It was great! |
| feeder 2007-02-27 ch 1, | abuse"NO ONE will EVER witness that incredible desolation called ‘nothing’" - I have, just take a trip down the street where I live and you'll see what I mean. My only problem with your argument is that it relies too much on the trivialities of dictionary definitions and language. Just because Webster says that absence = "noun: lack" does not mean that absence is therefore a thing, because it can only correctly be used to describe something that is no thing, and therefore not in existence. Any other use of the word absence is inherently wrong. Other than that it was good, interesting to read, and got me thinking a bit which is more than I can say for the essay that I should have been writing. |
| Tyrobia Harshaw 2007-02-25 ch 1, | abuseGreat essay! It really got me thinking. Great use of definition. Was a pleasure reading it. Thank you for posting it. |
| MissyAllykins 2007-02-24 ch 1, | abusewow. that did make my head hurt... you know, in one of those pleasant 'finally something to make you think' kind of ways though. ouch, kidna. but real cool, definately. addio, AmW |
| Will Sachiksy 2007-02-24 ch 1, | abuseYou were right that the writing style is very eay to follow (although the informality distracts at some points and makes me think that this should be spoken rather than read). And some of the definitions of nothing you put at the beginning I can tell you put a lot of thought into this, but I disagree with you on several points. I would agree that we are not able to comprehend nothing. It's definitely not some white space. At the same time, your "abscence" argument is lacking. Abscence is a state of being and not something that actually exists. It's like saying, "This isn't some literal thing, and we don't know what it is, but it needs a name anyway." Abscence means there is no something there. Black would be logical here, but again, we don't know for sure (besides, logic can break down). Again, with the emptiness, your abscence argument falls flat. Here, you write the argument off with fitting, contrasting imagery (although I do have a problem I will discuss later with your use of imagery). Cold exists when molecules are not vibrating or are vibrating slowly. If there are no particles to vibrate, which there shouldn't be if this is nothing, there will be neither heat nor cold. Your silence argument shares the problems of your emptiness argument. Also, sound is generated by vibration, and if this is "nothing," there should not be anything to vibrate. Again you use great imagery and remain fluent after your major points. However, the paragraph that begins, "Maybe, ‘nothing’ is something totally crazy," reverses all the points you made and the meaning of "nothing." Nothing is an abstract term. It is we that give "nothing" significance. At the end, the informal style draws too much attention to itself. Try to make the piece ever so slightly more formal, and more people might take your ideas seriously. I think absolute "nothing" is black, not white. So do most people I know. The use of contrasting elements, such as "a white so dark you can’t see your hand, and a black so light you are instantly blinded by its scorching whiteness," illuminates the improbability that we can understand nothing...but does little else but confuse the reader. You did not convince me, but at least you made me think (if you didn't, I wouldn't have written this lengthy review). If that's the most you make your reads do, I'd say you have a job well done. Better than nothing. Sorry. Couldn't resist. |
| Grace 2007-02-24 ch 1, anon. | abuse::pumps fist:: Finally! Someone who thinks as I do! Actually, I'm sure that there are many other people out there who think in similiar ways to me, but still...you're the first who's written an essay on it! Grace |
