Rant over. Your method is very good too, and reminds me of the method I was taught for writing newspaper articles. (First paragraph must establish who, what, when, were and how, and only then progress onto more detailed elements.)

Thank you for this awesome essay! I'm...not very good at summaries, usually. They sound arupt and cut-off, mostly because they are. I'll have to keep the 5 W's in mind from now on. it's been interesting to read your advice but i thought you would give one, more precisely, about the length :)

I have no problem with my summaries in fact, but i always feel like i haven't say enough, or on the contrary too much... it's so annoying!

So, if i can share my own experience, what i do when i have to write my summaries is that i do it in a Word page first, to make sure that i said all i want to say THEN i try to delete the unnecessary ... til i have only these stupid 255 characters!

This is three years too late but I have to say thank you for writing this. It was fun to read and it was to the point which made the essay easy to understand. I agree 100% with this essay. the summary is ALWAYS what sells me to read something. A person could write the next Don Quijote, or the Next La Carreta, but if their summary is 'I suck at summaries but please read this it is really good', then forget it. I am not gonna read it. I will practice more and more on my summaries, until I perfect the craft.

Very interesting article, and I found a lot of stuff in here I both agreed with, and other things I think might be useful for my future summaries.

But, um, that's not why I'm reviewing...you have a spelling mistake in this fics summary. You wrote 'me' when I'm pretty sure you meant 'be'. I don't usually care about that sort of stuff, but I figured you would want to know, since that is the subject of this essay _

This is helpful, though I think I'm alright with summaries. Even if I'm not, I wouldn't say so. I think those that aren't very good at them should know that saying they aren't just makes most readers turn away. I don't know how many times I didn't click on a story because they wasted space saying, 'I suck at summaries' and then usually a bit about the story being good. Well, the whole point of a summary is tell the reader WHAT the story is about (even only somewhat) so that they know if it interests them and is a topic they wouldn't mind clicking on, you know? We're not just gonna jump in with a complete blank on what the heck we're reading. At least I'm not.

You should maybe add a bit about misspelling. I don't know how many times I've seen people misspell words in their summary. If you can't even take the time to spell check, then whose to say that the writing isn't filled with multiple spelling mistakes? It just shows poor writing skills and the simple fact that you don't really care :P
