Is that talking-to-the-picture thing going to become a sort of a theme for Matthew? I think it would be good if it did, because it shows ...something, I don't quite know what. I don't know if people who lose their spouse normally do anything like that, but it seems like it would fit with the character as you have him currently established.

I like Mike(sorry, Michael :D)'s character quirks, too. Just thought I'd throw that in real quick.
