Reviews For: Super Powers
Jenny Jakins 2007-05-09 . chapter 1
Very very interesting. I'm glad I decided to take a look at this. I don't think I want to make comments for each individual story, but I especially liked Solemn Coyote's "Quirks and Curses". It's a very good idea and an exception newletters/compilation of articles. I'm going to go check out the past issues now. ^^
multiples of six 2007-05-04 . chapter 1
Woohoo, new issue! Let's see how many of these I can comment on individually before I get bored & give up. “Lookin’ Good in Tights” - interesting & not something I would've considered! Inpracticalties of Fire and Lighting - but fire power would be so convenient for roasting veggie burgers.. By The Way... hahaha! Random Factness - very random. Acquiring Powers vs. the Powers Within - LOVE the Shakespeare reference. If you could have a superpower… brilliant, but what else could you expect from multiples of six?? Relevant Fact - very true! Back to Reality - kind of depressing? A Call to Arm - I might actually do one of these.

Great issue, kids! =D
Sakka-Fenikkusu 2007-05-04 . chapter 1
Excellent job, guys. Everyone did great. Dice, welcome to the newsletter... but I didn't see any rhyming, so I'm the slightest bit ticked.

Hello, 'tis me, reviewing. So... here it is!

Bread, you did a great job on the intro; inspiring.

Yeah, I don't like the whole 'tights' thing on superheros. I mean, its easy for villains to see a flash of red in the sky; all the easier to run from a superhero to live again.

Yep. Good quote.

I'm sorry Dice, but I have to disagree. I believe that you'd build up an immunity against the element you control.

-laughs way too loud and gets grounded- That was so funny Wolf! But what is it with you and... nevermind.

Mary Sue's can be used, but I hate them. To... Mary Sue-ish.

Yay! 'Tis my quote!

I like discovering superpowers. It's the most fun. But this was a great article - um - I don't have a nickname for you yet. Do you mind just plain Keba? Oh well, tell me later.

I asked myself this one day. God probably would have summoned an electrictian from another world.

Soap opera heros. Weird.

Ah, me again. I found this quote somewhere; I haven't seen a single superhero movie in my life. I'm just weird that way.

Hm. I like my reality-bending power from 'Classroom of the Desperately Jaded'. It's cool. I wouldn't want to fly, I'm afraid of heights.

Yeah, I think I agree with you Fen-Fen. This was a good article.

Wolf, you're right. Why do superheros have nicknames? It's stupidity.

Hey Solemn, good article (The Inedible Pillbug, ha! so funny)

I have to agree with Solemn on the Ghandi thing. But all together you're right. Superhero's generally focus on the fate of the world as a whole, not a bunch of individuals.

Hey, 'tis me! Hi me! -waves- This article (for those who care) was inspired by a discussion I had with my family at the dinner table one night. We were trying to decide on the color of the belt I was wearing. My dad said that everyone lives on a different 'Earth', because everyone's perception of reality varies. It was a pretty cool discussion. So yay. That's the most I've typed in response to an article; whoops!

Yay! Challenges! They're always so... um... challenging. Ahem. I like numbers 3, 4, 5, and 9. I'm thinking of doing number 6, the passing of a superhero, but I'll probably forget. I'm actually writing one that fits the description of 10 (the title is Key to Freedom, if you want to read it). Please read it! I'm having a blast writing it!

I have tried to get my friend to write, but she always finishes her articles on the first of the month (I'm gonna need to talk to her about that)

Rites of Passage... Ooh goody! I have an idea! Time to waste my typing elsewhere!

Canilla, over and out!
Solemn Coyote 2007-05-03 . chapter 1
Ah, STP. And with a new format, no less.
1) "Damn it’s hard following Solemn, but I’ll try." I am all kinds of flattered. And impressed. The intro definitely brought on a warm-and-fuzzy sorta feeling. "As with all other superpowers, having the gift of the written language is not important, it’s what you choose to do with that counts." I'm not used to thinking of my word-scratchings as superpowers, but I appreciate the compliment.
2)Excellently witty, Dice. "For that reason alone, I give lightning two sparking middle fingers down." It would be interesting, though, to have a hero who's powers did constantly put him in the hospital. Runs-with-scissors-man, maybe?
3) Striped Feather, as part of a dwindling minority, I really don't have an issue with Mary Sues. As long as the writer knows that she's using one. An unnoticed Mary-Sue is plot-awkward. An intentional Mary-Sue can be used to highlight other character's flaws, be an object of envy, or even subtly poke fun of the over-Sueification of other stories.
4) "Now that Bread’s been taken off the ‘normal’ list by that last definition, we can move on." Um. Okay. Awkward. Is it wise to take a stab at Bread in STP? In Bread's newsletter? That'd be like going to Valhalla and tugging Thor's beard. I say this by way of cautionary note.
5)"This question has been asked and re-asked by schoolchildren and bored rednecks since the dawn of time," And me. I'm going to opt to establish a third category, here. People who are neither school-children nor bored rednecks.
6)Good points, Fenikkusu. It is important to have a few more powerful characters like Peter, just to give the flawed 'good guy' a fighting chance against the near-perfect villains. Or, to crank up the geek factor, occasionally you need a Superman in the Justice League.
7)"Name one time that a superpower healed the world, saved a soul, or even touched anyone on a deeper than physical level." Ghandi. He could fly. He just didn't let on. Seriously, though. We write about superpowers to give us an example of what the world should be like; to give us a reason to go out and do the right thing. And if a two-dollar twenty five page pulp book can inspire us to help even one person, that's pretty frickin' awesome. Excuse my optimism.
You might enjoy Alan Moore's "Watchmen".
8) Canillia, I like the ongoing story you've got in 'Classroom'.
9) Another good issue. I might have been a bit more critical in my review, but pay it no mind. I'll see you all next issue?
WyrdWolf 2007-05-02 . chapter 1
Okay, I am very rushed right now, but I will try to touch upon everything.

I, personally, am sick of tights. Especially prevalent ones in superhero movies. Little bit...gross.

Fire and lightning...eh, I have to disagree. Adeption (if that is a word...adeptness...I dunno) or naturally with the power would more than likely render something impervious to it. Kinda like how fish can't drown (essentially).

Ah, the Sue family. Fiction's bitchy neighbors. >_< Very good tips though, and easily applicable. Thanks much!

Mm. Power discovery/acquisition is often a keystone which gets covered in cliche. Definitely a good idea to consider alternatives to the mainstream.

Hee, Felicia, your section kinda jumped around a bit from knocking Bread down to criticism upon the human race. That's hot; I'm not gonna lie. ^^ Good for giggles, though. You can always get a giggle out of me!

Excellent point, Fen-Fen! And a good article with good advice. I very much want to see Heroes, it looks amazing. Don't suppose you could tell me the time and channel it's on?

Mobman, depressing but amazing. I have a feeling I'll be able to say that--at least the latter--about everything you put into this. Well done.

Stylo, your Classroom of the Desperately Jaded is both fun to read and helpful, which is a VERY potent combination. I especially liked the tip on personality bending of Elemenalists. Bravo.

Solemn, those ideas sound great, especially number 9. I may have to give that a shot (you know, once I get back to actually having a life).

Fantastic issue. Rites of Passage, huh? Lemme add that to my to-do list. *grin* This'll be fun.

Aww, Bread, I want to be a human torch ... "The interpretation of topics have never failed to surprise me at least once, and again (as always) this issue is filled with strange people doing what they do best." It's true. We're all strange in our own special ways ... Now, Bread. Why would I lie? I've no reason to make you look bad for my own personal gain. *whistles innocently*

The Solemn Coyote strikes again! And with surprising insight as to the make-up of my closet ... nicely written, kid.

Yay for quotes from Mobman! I feel inspired already ...

Ew. That Dice Darwin kid's back. Who invited him? AND the groupies, Dice? Why do they need to be included, hm? Got groupies of your own? I wouldn't even be surprised, knowing you. Your sarcasm is severely out of place in this. And for that, you get a 3.

"Then I would bury them in a pile of crappy pens." Shane, darling, you appear obssessed with the idea of crappy pens. Don't think I want to ask about that one ...

*dies a little* Mary Sue is my arch-nemesis! Huzzah for Striped Feather's informative and entertaining essay-thing, though! Yay!

... I like humming birds. And Canilla Stylo (who is still a pen in my book!)

Hey. Hey! Do I spy with my little eye Keba Si Rota stealing my segment? I think I do. Now we have to fight to the death, Keba Si Rota! DIE! *cough* I may have gone overboard, but I did like your piece. It was short, sweet and not really like mine after all! Good for you. *grins*

Stylo-Bille, if that'd happened, we wouldn't have nice things like computers and plumbing.

Pfft. Bread OBVIOUSLY doesn't have real powers. She's only imagining them! (p.s. Bread, I had no idea you were a girl. I found out yesterday and sent a shocked PM to Shane ... you can ask him)

Aww. Superman and Lux Luthor don't go so well together. But I did enjoy the movie ...

... 36 is a multiple of 6. Just thought I'd share. Great article, though. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Yay Fen-Shay! You made your article fun AND insulting! *grins cheekily*

No taco for you ... But good point, love. I don't see how you must have five nicknames for yourself ... unless you're my brother and then that's totally my bad!

It's true, Coyote. I agree with you 100 percent. And I like the rip-off in your little story-thing. Entertaining.

Wow. Mobman, you really lay it on. I had shivers by the end of that. What a downer! But it was needed and I thank you for writing it.

Whoa! Return of Slash. (still love that kid) I can't wait for next month ... that promises to be entertaining. Good for you, Stylo-Bille!

I would enjoy writing one/all of those, Coyote. Maybe I'll give you a call later to say I've done one/all of them, together in one plotline. Yayness!

Aww, Bread, you changed mine. *whines* But that's not what I submitted before ...

I don't love you, Dice Darwin!

Bread, being 'ruler of a straight line' is slightly ironic ... seeing as rulers make straight lines.

Heh. My bad. At least I submitted, right? Could be worse ... I could have submitted the day AFTER it was posted. Won't happen this month; I promise!

GREAT WORK, YOU GUYS! SEE YOU ALL AGAIN NEXT MONTH ... OR ELSE!

Irrevocably,
Felicia.
Keba Si Rota 2007-05-02 . chapter 1
Wow, I'm the first to review. Woohoo! At least I think I am. Someone might have just submitted a review a few seconds before me. Maybe not.

Anyway, this issue was pretty good. I especially liked Dice's and Solemn Coyote's pieces. However I did see a few mispellings:

Cirque de Sole = Cirque de Soleil

Lux Luthor = Lex Luthor

And, I saw this one a lot:

Spiderman = Spider-Man

Yes. There is a hyphen. 'Scuse my pickiness.

On one final note, Solemn Coyote's challenges seem quite interesting. I actually had an idea kind of like Challenge #2 for a story, but it would take me forever since I like to concentrate on one story at a time and I'm a slow updater. But I just might take you up on that challenge in the future.
