I guess everyone's had regrets, especially when they could have done something in the situation, yet ended up not doing so. I've sure had my share.

As this is based on the idea that you never spoke and hence there was no dialogue throughout, my opinion would be that the 'he' as he was not named should have said something yet you never replied - like explicitly in dialogue form.

Wow. Absolutely heartbreaking. This piece was excellently written and the emotion is so strong. Excellent, excellent job! I'm adding this to my favorites.
