I didn't really get that you felt bad about this bird's death until you said, "You deserved better than that." If it hadn't been for that, I would've thought you were just making observations. Most of the problem was in the structure, I think. It seemed sort of robotic. Maybe try to make things flow more? That might help with the whole emotion thing.
