The steps-to-the-door was cute, and I like how he loves her enough to keep coming back. And good grammar always a plus; you actually punctuate dialog! But if you want to put participles in, you always put them at the beginning; switch it up a little: put them at the end, put them after the noun...though you may need to add a couple of words.
