| Tiefling 2007-09-22 ch 1, | abuse"The big issue, even at the moment is the huge population. It is currently around six billion, and that’s quite a bad thing; because given another few hundred years that number would have at the most extreme least quadrupled; and that figure alone is staggering...Perhaps in time the inevitability of war, or disaster will reduce it too fewer, more manageable numbers." Well, there are plenty of threats facing us- bacteria which have become increasingly resistant to antibiotics, viruses, global warming etc. "Obviously it is ethically and morally wrong to try reducing the population ourselves," I don't think that's 'obvious' at all. On the contrary, I support making methods of birth control and education about family planning widely available. "The writer doesn’t know too much about the world and space in general, but knows enough to know that we can’t stay here forever. " We can't stay *anywhere* forever. We will eventually become extinct, like every other species. Don't worry about it though. You'll be long dead before it happens. "it seems we know it all" No, it doesn't. I doubt you could find a scientist who believes that. That was an interesting piece of speculation, though it was very short. |
| derisive snort 2007-09-18 ch 1, | abuseNively worded and nicely sucsinct. I'm gald that you don't just pound on the idea that we're all going to die. I think there's room for optimism, there are a lot of very real ideas oput there about reducing the effect we have on the planet. It's possible to make some pretty serious reductions. And I alwasy believe in being optimistic becuase being pessimistic is pretty miserable in this world. But then you seem pretty optmistic yourself. 2 billiuon years is a long time to hope that the human race will survive too. Everything we've done so far has been in a few thousand. In fact the earth hasn't even existed for too many biliions of years. |
