Reviews For: Drowned When Deceased
Taltush/MeiMei 2007-10-27 . chapter 1
The imagery here is excellent, let's start with that. It's really quite beautiful. However, beauty isn't everything, and I think this poem could have taken advantage of that a little more. A lot of this is an empty sort of beauty. I feel like all the statements do connect and do sort of at least have a point (which is rather surprising and pleasant, since most "pretty" poems of this nature don't). On the other hand, I felt nothing reading this poem. It lacked an inspirational spark that could really pull me in. Metaphors and poetic methods are meaningless unless they can convey something to the reader. All I got here was, "Oh, this person knows how to write well... how does that relate to me again?" Well, in answer to my own question (pretentious, I know), it kind of doesn't, and that's the reason this poem doesn't live up to its quality of writing. It actually evades the most easy trap of "only beauty" by actually having something interesting in it, but it still isn't enough (or so I feel - just one reader's opinion). The flow here isn't particularly striking either. It's a bit awkward at times and feels sort of rushed. There isn't a balanced rhythm, which is okay, but all together just gives it a sort of incomplete, hurried feel. While this poem is far from bad (again, your writing talent is clear with these descriptions and the easy evasion of typical traps), I feel like it would need a bit more spark to really be good. Emotion, or something. I honestly don't know. I just feel like this poem is missing something important. That's just my opinion, and I'm still quite impressed by your control of the imagery. Really nice job with that.

I really like this piece, especially the lines 'Stunning statues and fantastical fires/should breathe life into these passing souls-'

I love the descriptions found throughout the poem and the resolution at the end.

Fabulous!
