SingLikeNo1IsListening 2008-08-07 . chapter 1
to be honest, this would have been more helpfull to me if i had read it the first day that i got on FP,but after about two weeks, my head kinda figured it all out. lol. anyway, it was very informative, and ill suggest it to "noob" friends of mine.=]
Thanks for the time you put into this!

Let's see... I've broken a lot of those rules and probably will cont. to do so. Yeah, flame wars, I get into those a lot. I use to be big on the flame-ige. I read stories, but if a story is sucky... I would flame it to death and insult the author too. But I don't really do that as much. Usually it goes along this way, I flame an author, she sends me an 'insulted' email or flame one of my stories for the certain category or ship, I post said emails on her next update chapter and tear the entire thing apart for its obvious stupidity. She eventually gives up with attempting to insult me because it never works out well on her part and continue to write trashy, pathetic, OOC, Mary Sue-quality bullsh*t.

But trust me, I will NEVER EVER put an author's note in the middle of the story... ack. I hate when people do that.

Gay.. gAy.. GAY... Yeah, broken a rule w/o really trying.

Anyways, this is a nice little survival guide, I liked reading it.

straight from the review marathon! (link in profile)

wow, this is definitely a guide to FP. it's quite comprehensive. XD good job with that.

i think, though, that some of the format changed on FP since you wrote this, so you may want to go back and edit... i don't think you need to double space anymore. :)

and with new features (like beta and docx) you might want to add a little blurb about those. :)

otherwise, good job. keep writing!

Really? You have to double space? Do you have to do that on fanfiction too?

OMG- I really needed that. I felt so slow before when all these people kept using weird abbrievations that I've never seen before. Now things make more sense! Thanks so much for posting this!

OC is original character, not other character or there'd be OC's running all over the place (I mean even more than now). Mary sue's are a no-no, you are misleading people into thinking OC's have to be as perfect as possible, that's not true, OC's can ust be random person A.

I think this would be clearer if you edited out the fanfiction parts and stuck just with the original fiction terms to avoid confusion.

Also, while I disagree that Live Journal is another "writing" site (online journal that some authors use to post stories is what I would call it) some other website that probably should be mentioned are Deviant Art (used for both for writing and character sketches), the fictionpress review (lovely little bugger that can be used to find the great stories buried in all the not so great ones), Facebook (it is growing more popular everyday and there is even a nifty little fictionpress writers group on there that is growing steadily), OF Ficathon (contest on Live Journal), and Nanowrimo (or National Novel Writing Month. Actually going on right now, but a lot of writers on Fictionpress participate). Ok most of those aren't slang, but they are helpful sites for fictionpress writers.

More Slang:
- ConCrit: looking for constructive Criticism
- Repost: a story that was lost in the archives so the author deleted the story and started a "new" story with the old material.
- Revised: A story that was once posted but the author is reworking to make it better. A lot of writers do this for their early works since the story concept was good, but the early writing was not up to par.
- R&R: (I find this kind of funny that you used it, but didn't explain it, so I know you know what it means)

Mary Sues are ALWAYS a derogatory term, ALWAYS! they do not need to be perfect, just badly characterized so that they have little to no personality. For a better and very long idea of what Mary Sues are search for the Mary Sue Litmus Test on Google or something.

Noob/Newbie/N00b is a gaming term, I personally have never seen it on this site, maybe it is more common on since they have a section for video games, but I haven't really been on that site since Fictionpress was just an overgrown subsection jamming the servers.

That is another thing you might want to include, Fictionpress history. It's really simple, but nice information to have.

Some additional Do's and Do not's:
- Do write a Summary, and no ... does not count. If you can't think of something to say, let a friend read it over and write one for you. This is what gets people interested enough in your story to actually read it.
- Do not write I suck at summaries in your summary. It will not get you pity reviews.
- Do make sure you don't have any egregious spelling or grammar mistakes in either your summary or title. Those same kids who nit pick about mistakes in your story will straight up ignore a store who misspells things in the summary.
- Do offer constructive criticism where you can. It is not flaming to point out mistakes, it only helps the author improve and as long as you are polite about it, most appreciate those reviews much more than a hundred "OMG! LOVE LOVE LOVE this!"
- Do not mark your story as complete if you are still working on it. Some readers search specifically for completed stories so they can sit and read the whole thing from start to finish and get really annoyed getting into a story that is not complete.
- Do not Plagiarize! I know this should be obvious, but it should at least be said once because it is done too much as it is. This means don't steal from anyone, even other writers on fictionpress, your teacher, or an existing novel, not anything ever!
- (ok this is more my personal opinion, but I'm going let you know I'm not alone in this) Please refrain from begging for reviews. It is one thing to ask for help i.e. "I am having trouble with this story/poem. If you have any suggestions, they would be appreciated" or committing that you will return reviews, but another thing entirely to sound desperate i.e. PLZ R&R. A lot of readers find this insulting especially if that is all you say in the summary.

Ok, that was a lot of extra information to throw at you, but if you have any questions about any of the stuff I was talking about, don't be shy in messaging me or even if you just want to laugh at my anal retentive reviews that really go on to long. Now I think this is my cue to skedaddle.

Here's a better guide:
People write however they want.
Writing is not a simple skill mastered by reading a made up guide by a couple of children.
It's an art form that should have neither boundaries to style nor guides to success.
