I really like the way you intersperse the religious text with the story. The narrative voice is also really good. However, the end of this chapter is too vague. Did the father try to kill Tobiah too? Like a murder suicide? How would he have done that (it sounds like poisoning/drug overdose)? At first it sounds like Tobiah is the one that died, since you describe his physical condition followed immediately by the line "The death was ruled a suicide". I didn't actually think that, since the story is ABOUT Tobiah, but that's how it reads.

I love it. Very nice prologue, sets up the story and catches interest. Can't wait for more.
