Nice rant and I agree on all your points, especially the last one. Magic is so often used as a 'get out of jail free card' or to make the hero uber powerful and show just how spechul he is.

The elves/dragons scene is the reason why I don't read fantasy; every single fantasy story seems to have to include that kind of thing, and it isn't what I want to read. Nice essay. :)

A lot of people misunderstand the limits and underestimate the genre of fantasy altogether. While I have never seen anyone get flamed so much as insulted, dissed, whatever you want to call it, I think there's something you missed: some reviews that come out seeming condescending or insulting (resulting in being called a 'flame') can, in fact, be critique. I'm not saying that it's necessarily the best of criticism, seeing as most of the time it furthers to tear down the blocks rather than help build them. I've seen a lot of people get picked on or verbally beat for that, trying to help someone in perhaps not the best of words.

But other than that, I agree with you. I dislike how everyone mistakes 'fantasy' as 'dumb people who run around with sticks, swords or other weapons slaying dragons' and the like. It bothers me.
