JL 2008-09-09 . chapter 1 The short narrative actually presents a refreshing change from the usual introspective reflections on the 'sunset' setting. In fact it self consciously reacts against this.
I like the juxtaposition of the often detailed observations on the surroundings with the obvious idiosyncracies of the protagonist as she makes these observations. This was done rather well as too much detail in the former would lead to boredom on the part of the reader as the narrative would not be forwarded much and too much on the latter could lead to too much self indulgent introspection. So the writer strikes a nice balance.
I would take a bit of care with the use of language as it bordered at times on over-used phrases and metaphors. The ending is a bit of a let down as I thought the build up of emotion and character was dropped too quickly. But maybe that was the writer's intent.
But all in all, a well written piece showing a great deal of potential. |
