"My sister and I were always desert women." This opening line is absolutely captivating. The calming, almost nostalgic, tone here is wonderful.

"Ribboned its body in rigid currents." Your phrasing here is superb.

"We never broke the surface again." Excellent final line! The tone shifts to angst and hopelessness. Wow. :)
