letitshine 2009-05-31 . chapter 2
As an Asian myself - Bangladeshi parents! - I can't help but relate. From cultural expectancies, to having to mute 'carnal' music; from zero PDA, to being bugged for good grades... Wow. It's scary how alike we are.

lmbo! your mom sounds exactly like mine. right down to the "why are you laughing? who is your boyfriend?" spiel. sigh. and same with the whole "i want you to marry a nice chinese boy who goes to church who's either a doctor or lawyer and then have two... no three kids and i'll babysit for you!" (my mom's words, not mine) which is never going to happen because the thought of childbirth freaks the hell out of me.

anyway... love your little stories about your family; do you ever share them with your friends? because my friends and i get a kick out of asian parent stories lol very good stress relievers during a week full of tests and what not

(p.s. have you ever gone to mymomisafob dotcom? if not, i think you might enjoy it :] )

heyy, i love this story or autobiography or quirky little anecdotes, whatever they are! i so could imagine something like that happening in my family, with the whole race thing, as a matter of fact just a few weeks back my grandmom told me and my sister to not marry out of our caste, i wonder what she would say if one of us got married to someone white or black, lol! anyway, keep writing please, i absolutely adore your style of writing, you're def one of my favs here in fp, hope you have a good day :)
Dancing In Magic 2009-03-22 . chapter 2
ok, sorry to review twice in such a short amount of time, but parents are like this here too!! Its frustrating, is it not? Except, my parents would be downright furious if I even hinted at liking a outta my race guy...not that they are racist, but it was just how they and I grew up. Since I was born in India and not where I am now. Whatever, its best to just deal with it, I guess. :) Nice second chapter by the way!
Dancing In Magic 2009-03-22 . chapter 1
This is a really good story, my family is exactly like this as well! Except, we are not Chinese, but Indian. I never knew that India was the only country like that. I love my heritage though, and it seems like you do too! :D Very excellent short story, it gives us a little peek into your life. I love all your stories though, "They Call it a Cliche" is fascinating!

i love this story of your family. it's funny seeing similarities (my mum's asian and my parents/family are Christian), and that love shouldn't be hindered by stereotypes. and I love the little bits of humour, and just how down-to-earth it all is. great writing. please update soon.

Can I say I feel like really laughing.
How is it that all our important conversations always end up being spoken in chinese?

I'm lucky my brother hasn't gotten a girlfriend yet, then. My family's different, I think. My brother's pledged to stay single, and I don't think I'd be taken off the shelf either(this one,is really not a choice). I'd say those decisions were shaped by family issues.

Hum.

I'm so glad I stumbled across this because it's just so refreshing to read something like...this (about Asian parents).
I kept on laughing as I read the story because (omg)my parents are exactly like that.
And I like the way you wrote your conversation between you and your mum. Love the Jonas bros reference! lol.

You live in Singapore right? Are there a lot of Burmese people there?

Haha, so glad that my last review amused you so much. Funny thing is, my mom really wants my sister and I to marry a 'nice, tall, smart Caucasian' who preferably is not myopic. Well, I can't say I don't feel the same way, because you gotta say, biracial babes are so pretty.
Ahem. Anyway. Your mom is decidedly more interesting than mine in this aspect! By the way, just curious, does your mom speak perfect English?
Maureen 2009-03-15 . chapter 2
Wow.

My parents are exactly the same too. But instead of my mom, it's more of my dad.

He told my sister that he doesn't want to find her dating any of her Filipino or Indian friends because they're black. My jaw literally dropped when he said that. I thought it was pretty racist, but no one in my family dares to talk back to my father. Even my mom. Then, my dad told me not to date caucasians. Then, my mother always tells me to marry someone with same religion. And yada yada yada.

I love stories of your family. It's just so easy to relate :D It's true you know. Sometimes I really do think that our parents are still stuck in the '70s or something. They always go like, "When I was a teenager, I don't ... " Hm.

it's pretty retarded. the last review went wonky for some reason (i blame fp). my parents are all traditional too. no sex before marriage and all that pretty stuff. i don't think they mind about what race i marry (though i know that i'd prefer me to marry a filipino). my mum's pretty broad minded too, so it's all cool. though, unlike your mum, she's really hates talking about s e x. haha. i don't think she's ever really explained it to me either. i learned from school, i guess.

knowing you're crazy about this stuff, just wanted to say you forgot to end the quotation on the second last line. that's about all i could spot out (you freak). haha.

i gotta laugh at the random song mentions in this piece. msi, john mayer, jonas brothers - ha! you just forgot say anything, but that will be covered with remission. lol.

can't wait to see what scenario you will post up next.

aw, hubby! i love the simplicity of this story & i love the fact that it's coming from your own experiences as well. i've had the similar problems whenever it comes to getting presents for my parents. i think i've told you about my dad already dissing me when i saved all my cash for the guitar. hm.

but the candle thing is definitely like what happened to me. haha. i went to this candle store and bought my mum a glass cylider candle holder. (i got it all pretty, putting a plastic flower in the inside the cylinder etc). and when she got it she goes 'i can't use this.' the next thing i know, she's recycled it a present to one of my relatives. Haha..guh. Haha. zowell!

loves it! - goes and read the second chapter -

But it's true how our parents are more into the important things such as us trying our best at school and how they love us in the end. though, my parents get sad when i don't give them cards on their anniversaries or bdays. Haha. zow

emrevolemina 2009-03-13 . chapter 2
