I think this story was mind-blowingly amazing. Powerful, simply written yet touching. About halfway through (the beginning of the military part) I guessed what Old Ben meant by "Forever 17", but it didn't stop the ending from making my eyes wet. Wonderful job.

Wow. Powerful story. Slightly creepy though, I turned 17 a few days ago and I've been having the same kind of thoughts of not wanting to grow up. I have to say this really motivated me.

This is very well written. It reminds me of that new Brad Pitt movie...but with a twist. Very true and important message.

"He told us to call him 'Old Ben.'" I don't know what it is about this line, but it's absolutely wonderful - perhaps it's the nostalgic tone that blends well with wisdom here that draws the reader into this line. I loved the 'military bearing' twist to this fellow's character - very creative. "No one is really dead, as long as people who love him remember him. I remember Red. And now so do you." Holy cow. The emotion in this line is so profound - I'm all teary-eyed. This was a great one-shot. Powerful message. :)

I love the way you drew me into this, I thought it would be a story about why living forever is a folly.
And I'm pleased to say I like this much better.

I loved that line. Inspired me no end. :)

Also the ending brought a tear to my eye, :). It was lovely and sad, and you wrote in wonderfully. I like the age differences and how time had changed. I always like to hear the stories older people tell, and this was great.
