Louis Denair 2009-09-06 . chapter 1It's funny that the repetition of a few words in different cases over and over again can actually have a pretty strong impression on the psyche. I'm your number one skeptic when it comes to progressive poetry. In fact, progressive anything makes me feel unsettled and bursting with cynicism. Progressive is too often a very bad case of euphemism, in fact. But this works, ya know. It reminds me of Poe's poem about the tolling bells, I don't recall the name. Now, Poe was a bit more expansive with vocabulary but the principle was the same. Start out plain, expand, introduce new aspects, all the while- repeat, repeat, repeat, thus creating the impression of a sound pattern and indeed, of a rhythmic pattern entirely. Now introduce an indication, or a symbol, of say, DEATH. Now the rhythm is the rhythm of life. The bells are the funeral bells. I don't remember if it was the case in Poe but I think it is the case here. And I love it. I love it. I'm utterly raving about it. |
