Ah, I love fables and you did a pretty good job with this one. The ending

"And on a warm evening not long after that, the green traveler wandered back out from the kingdom, far into the heart of the desert, and not the crowing of birds nor the whisper of sand have brought news of him since."

lingers. I am more accustomed to stories with a little more explanation though, and I think the modern audience has learned to expect the little gaps filled in for them in a story. Where did the green traveler get the copper wire? Is there another story behind that? What was the evil magician's motive? Did he draw from those thunder clouds for power? Or did he wish to do the kingdom harm?
