Lynn K. Hollander 2009-10-11 . chapter 2You wrote: 'In a sentence such as that one, it actually would be my brothers and I. If you are in first person you do not put yourself first. I've actually listened to several English professors correct students on saying sentences as you have just suggested to me.
But thanks for the comment.' --You don't seem to understand the comment.
This is the sentence you wrote and I commented on: My dad took my three brothers and I camping, hunting, and fishing all the time. It is incorrect.
Here you are using 'I' where you should be using 'me'. It doesn't matter whether it's my brothers and me or if it's me and my brothers --either is correct-- but it does matter if you use the subject pronoun, 'I' ,and not the object pronoun, 'me'. Saying/writing My father took I camping is incorrect.
This is correct: My father took ME camping. This is also correct: My father took ME and my brothers camping. So is this: My father took my brothers and ME camping. It's not the position of the first person pronoun in the compound object that is incorrect, it's using the subject and not the object form.
This is from 'Real Fantasy': 'Jesse looked at them, shocked that they had actually not done something he had wanted them to. Why couldn’t they just do the project without him?' --here you use subject pronouns --he and they-- correctly and also use object pronouns --him and them-- correctly. For some reason, and this is not unique to you, people have problems about I/me when the object is compound -- my brothers and ME, her and ME, them and ME.
You may be thinking of a compound SUBJECT like this: My brothers and I went camping. The object pronoun --ME-- would not be used here: Me went camping --is obviously wrong. My father took I camping --is also obviously wrong.
I hope my explanation is now clearer. There is a very good book --The Transitive Vampire ... Grammar for the Innocent, the Eager and the Doomed-- which is not only very helpful but is a fun read. I highly recommend it to you. |
Lynn K. Hollander 2009-10-08 . chapter 1The I/me problem. ~~Subject form: 'I' is the subject form --I take, I go, I sleep, etc. The subject form acts: I give; I give this to him.
~~Object form: 'Me' is the object form --to me, about me, for me, etc. The object form recieves: He gives that to ME.
This is incorrect: My dad took ... I camping, hunting, and fishing
--My dad took my three brothers camping. He took them camping. ~~That's the correct OBJECT form. He took me camping. This is also the correct OBJECT form.
My dad took ME and my brothers camping. ~~Even when the OBJECT is compound --ME and my brothers-- it's still ME. |
Darklight Shadow 2009-10-07 . chapter 1Hey.. I doubt you'd remember me since I've been AWOL for nearly two years now.. But anyway, a great beginning to an interesting story! Inara actually reminds me of a close friend who would rather die than wear a skirt and act like a girl.. =) Well done! |
Xbakiyalo 2009-10-07 . chapter 1Wow this is looking really great. I have to say I smiled when the line, Do Not Drink The Holy Water, was used so soon. I love the connotations of that. I can't wait to see this parallel world, and the mysteriously-named Hood! This is looking like a great story, I really hope you continue!
If you have the chance, it would be wonderful if you could check out my story =D
