Ephemeral Seraphim 2009-10-13 . chapter 1Well, I've taken the liberty of reading this story. I'm going to say that you haven't lost your touch when it comes to literary magic, Terryll. You definitely know how to present a story, and I think that you present a full-throttle voice that creates a compelling persona of a psychotic, mercurial, and hedonistic character such as Yumi. Her dialect is certainly different, though I think that it creates another dimension to her character and that it's a distinguishing quirk that I rather enjoy. I can tell that you've put a lot of effort into the voice alone, and I enjoyed reading the narrative. Even with the stylistic changes in tone from the original incarnation of Yumi: Violent Tendencies, I say that you're still true to Yumi's character, and I do believe that you've created a more in-depth version of the ever beloved Yumi Hyyazaki. Normally, I have an aversion to expletives used to the extreme, though I believe that this is very natural to Yumi's character, and besides that, Yumi has creative obscenities which doesn't make the narrative seem monotonous.
Thank you so much for dedicating this story to me! I really appreciate it, and you're my greatest writing idol. Of course, Yumi has always been a favorite character of mine--and even though you say that she was meant to be nothing more than a 'stereotypically bad girl assassin without a heart', I think that you still portrayed her compellingly and made her a very interesting character. Of course, all your characters are well-delineated, though there's something about Yumi that is fascinating. Perhaps it's the twisted psyche, or the lack of morals, or the way that she degenerated into a psychological mess of a person--either way, Yumi is a memorable character to me, and I love her for all these qualities, as unsavory they would seem. I enjoy her malice, her cunning, her ruthlessness, her madness. She is truly an unbalanced character, and even though Aia Oyugi also had a traumatic past, she still somehow maintains some semblance of sanity and morality, while Yumi lacks such qualities. There is something deliciously tempting about such characters, those who are unstable, who have unpredictable shifts in mood or thought patterns. There's an element of danger and suspense, and it's these qualities that make these characters worth reading about. With Yumi's voice, her personality, and the narrative, you've definitely outdone yourself. This is damn good story material right here.
The author's note is also another fascinating read, and I enjoyed reading it as much as the narrative itself. I think the commentary provided creates a deeper understanding for the reader. Overall, I would have to say that you've exceeded my expectations once again. You truly are an immensely talented author, and there's good reason why you're my most cherished writing idol. You already know my sentiments toward this story--I would very much like you to continue this story. Though I won't put pressure on you by saying that you should update immediately, but in the time frame that you can. I understand that the writing process can be a long and strenuous practice, and the inspiration itself can be fickle. I've been through this experience enough times. So on a parting note, I would like you to know that I'm touched to know that you find my reviews worth writing for. If I can give you any encouragement in any way possible, even if it's through a humble a review, then I am certainly glad to provide. |
