Nice beginning! It sets the tone for the story and makes one wonder how these poor soldiers got into this position. I am rooting for them even before I know any of the characters. The starting description is great, too, I loved how you described time.

I've just read several other war stories, and this is my favorite so far. Obviously, it's very short but that will change soon, right? Good attention to grammar (that's a big issue on this site, as I'm sure you've noticed) and I'm eaer to read more.
