Why oh why do bad guys ALWAYS have to explain themselves to the hero/heroine instead of just killing them?

Fiction wouldn't be the same if they didn't would it?

An interesting premise. Reminiscent of 'Temptation Eyes' ep of QL, only there it was a reporter doing it for ratings.
