"He has a thirst for stones." I love it. This man sounds so stoic. I also like the way in which "war like an ocean" appears to be both feminine and masculine (a combination of the strength and beauty in both war and water).

The meaning isn't apparent to me, but that's ok; it gives me something to puzzle over.
