It is interesting and I wouldn't mind seeing you expand upon it. This piece could be worked perfectly into a bigger story. It could work either as a background story that influences the present (not necessarily the present time now) or tell the story during the war and then men destroying them.

Or you can take your own take on it. I'd love to see you add more to it though.
