The whole thing blooms once I take it all in. Great structure with the word 'descent' foreshadowing exactly what it is in the first line. Nice with how 'but suddenly' begins on a new line, following the attempt at 'friction', trying to stop. It abruptly - as the word denotes - ends any hope for that action.

Excellent word choice, overall.
