As short stories go, I'm not sure what the "purpose" of this is. It feel more like a snippet of a larger story than a fully developed short story. I never got the feeling of the climax and/or plot or that there was a definite resolution. For the most part, things were just left hanging.

There was also a seeming disconnect between the two scenes you've described. In the beginning they're looking at the stars and quoting scripture, in the second they're running a private investigation. I didn't understand how the two related and supported each other.
