The idea and story is very good. The way it's written and the literature not so much. The way it's written is difficult to understand; you fail to get your point across. Sometime's it's through using the wrong word (you used "broad" instead of "narrow"), or small literature techniques. Most of it will, if you were publishing, be corrected by the editor; some are just difficult to understand and you should try to proof read it, to make sure it's understandable.
I actually like all these stories, a lot. The only thing is the literature. I like where you're going with it. Really. :)

Have you ever known the reason behind Steinbeck naming one of his stories "Of Mice and Men"?
There was this poem about a mouse making a house for itself. The mouse tried it's hardest to make that house putting in all of it's effort and hard work. At last when the house was complete, it was then crushed under the foot of a man. So much time and effort only to be destroyed in moments. What the poem conveyed was that what happen to the mouse can easily happen to the man.
You may have already knew about this or you may recall a different reason behind Steinbeck's title. In any case perhaps you should consider the poem and relate that with your philosophy of life in which as you said it is fragile but also the one thing people put every ounce of time and effort into.
By the way a nice story.
