"but he listened/very well;"... I just didn't like that. I felt like there was a better way to describe with more detail or poignancy how he listened.

I did like the rest of it though. I could see him there with you and I liked the specificity of the the cigarette detail. I also liked "only ever wanted to be found." It was such a powerful line.
